Sudbury Companies of Militia & Minute

Colonial Faire & Muster of Fyfe and Drums

On September 29, the Sudbury Companies of Militia & Minute and the Sudbury Ancient Fyfe and Drum Companie hosted a full day of events. It was a perfect fall day with children children playing games that were common in 1774 in the morning. Later in the morning, contra dancers entertained the crowd. The public was invited to a wedding with the newly weds honored by an arch of muskets and bayonets. Later in the morning, the Sudbury Militia met with their new Colonel. However, there were Redcoats nearby who hastily grabbed not only the newly elected colonel but also the outgoing colonel and an innocent colonel of the past. Colonial militia then pursued the Redcoats and exchanged musket fire along the service road. When the musket fire ended, the Redcoats surrendered, must to the pleasure of the people in Sudbury. Fifes and drums could be heard in the distance as they assembled for their parade from the Grist Mill to the muster field. After the parade, each fife and drum company returned to play a stand piece to the delight of the crowd. We were honored to have the Old Guard Fife & Drum Corps play for us this year. During the day, there were many vendors and sutlers selling their wares. The field was filled with many colonial militia and Crown regiments who drilled during the day. Hearty food and baked goods were available throughout the day. And there were many games that tested the skills of children and adults.

Join us on September 27, 2008 for another Colonial Faire and Muster of Fyfe and Drums. Check back as more information becomes available.
