On September 27, the Sudbury
Companies of Militia & Minute and the Sudbury Ancient Fyfe and Drum Companie
hosted a full day of events. The rain held off until the moment the faire ended.
This year, officers of the Sudbury Militia demonstrated games children may have played during 1774. Later in the morning, contra dancers entertained the crowd. Soon after a drummer beated his drum for assembly, the town crier announced that the town of Sudbury had formed a local militia and then introduced the newly elected officers of the Sudbury Companies. Colonel Rock began drilling his militia and after he got his recruits to fire their muskets, British Regulars arrived and arrested the new colonel. The militia then pursued the Redcoats and exchanged musket fire along the service road. When the musket fire ended, the Redcoats surrendered, much to the pleasure of the people in Sudbury. Fifes and drums could be heard in the distance as they assembled for their parade from the Grist Mill to the
muster field. After the parade, each fife and drum company returned to play a stand piece to the delight of the
crowd. During the day, there were vendors and sutlers selling their wares and food, craftsmen demonstrating their skills of the colonial times and colonial militia and Crown regiments trying to fill their ranks with new recruits. Children could be seen testing their skills at games.
Join us on September 26, 2009 for another Colonial Faire and Muster of Fyfe and Drums.
